According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Reuters, the Greek parliament approved a 10% tax on cryptocurrency earnings on November 5th, establishing the first comprehensive crypto taxation framework, with earnings below 500 euros per year being exempt from tax. Treasury officials stated that rules regarding transparency and tax audits will be introduced subsequently. This tax rate is lower than the 15% discussed this year. In June, Crypto.news reported that the government was preparing a proposal for a 15% tax rate, with an exemption of 500 euros. The Treasury Department stated in a consultation announcement that exchanging one cryptocurrency for another does not generate taxable capital gains. The bill stipulates that within 12 months from the date of the law's publication, investors may voluntarily declare earnings from earlier transfers without having to pay fines or interest under certain conditions. Greece's legislation comes at a time when the EU's DAC8 rules require crypto service providers to report information on crypto transactions of EU residents, which came into effect on January 1, 2026.
