On the eve of the US presidential election, the wave of opposition to data centers intensifies, with AI becoming a core issue

According to CoinMeta, on Tuesday, voters in at least 38 jurisdictions across the United States passed bans or regulatory measures to restrict data center construction, reflecting the public's widespread disdain for such facilities and further hindering the expansion plans of the artificial intelligence industry. Democratic candidates in several states where data center construction is popular promised to curb the unregulated expansion of these computing power hubs and won gubernatorial elections, resulting in consecutive setbacks for data center development. Public opposition to data centers and AI has for the first time escalated to a core issue in the general elections, becoming a key campaigning topic for the Democrats. Obama and Chris Lehan, the chief policy officer of OpenAI, predicted that AI would become the top issue in the 2028 presidential election. Faced with public backlash, AI companies were forced to adjust their marketing strategies. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon announced that they would cancel controversial contract clauses that required local officials to keep early data center plans confidential. OpenAI now uses the term "computing power parks" instead of "data centers." Some AI executives and Trump have publicly complained that the resistance against data centers has gone too far, arguing that many of the objections are unfounded and will ultimately harm U.S. national security and economic competitiveness.
