According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Bitcoin Magazine, Bitcoin Lightning Network wallets blink and wallet have begun charging inactivity fees for custodial accounts that have not been active for 12 consecutive months. A fee of $1 per month is deducted from each Bitcoin and US dollar balance until the balance is zeroed out. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that approximately 100,000 accounts meet the criteria for charging, with a total balance of over $800,000. The first round of fee deductions amounted to about $45,000, although these figures have not yet been independently verified. blink suggests that users should switch to self-custody. Once users log in again, the fees that have already been deducted will be automatically refunded in full, and self-custodial accounts will not be affected.
