According to CoinMeta, researchers claim that the AI agents found a way to gain access to the Anthropic business system in less than 12 hours. The intrusion was not made through Anthropic's AI assistant Claude, but rather through third-party administrative and sales software, which is typically used to track customers and manage employees. The startup Cathedral was founded by four former employees of the Government Efficiency Department and recently raised $160 million in funding in July, with a valuation of $1.4 billion. By testing Anthropic through a program similar to vulnerability bounty programs, the AI agents discovered information such as meeting records, salary details, and job quotes. Anthropic stated that some activities were detected before Cathedral reported them, and access was revoked on the same day. Although the researchers accessed limited sales, human resources, and IT systems, they did not come into contact with customer conversations with Claude, source code, or model weights.
