According to CoinMeta, the Bank of Japan is expected to maintain its policy interest rate at 1.25% unchanged at its October meeting. Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda hinted that there is no need for consecutive interest rate hikes, but rates will have to rise further towards a neutral level. Committee member Junko Ogushi also stated last week that the central bank should not be too cautious regarding interest rate hikes. Kimshi believes the most likely path is to raise rates to 1.50% in December or January, followed by another increase to 1.75% in March or April. This would continue the relatively rapid pace of raising rates every three to four months. The committee is roughly divided into four camps. The hawks, led by Takahiko Takada and Naoki Tamamura, may begin to push for the next interest rate hike on Friday, laying the groundwork for a possible move at the December meeting. On the dovish side, Hitoshi Asada and Ayano Sato previously voted against recent rate hikes. In terms of data, Tokyo's CPI for October is expected to show that all three key indicators are between 2.7% and 2.8%, partly reflecting the waning impact of local fiscal support. Employment, industrial output, and retail sales data for September will also be released.
