Swedish Central Bank Calls on Parliament to Reconsider Issuing Digital Kronor
2026-10-23 17:18:39
According to CoinMeta, as reported by Reuters, the Swedish Central Bank has called on parliament to reconsider issuing a digital krona (e-krona), warning that the development of foreign currency stablecoins and digital euros could undermine the position of the Swedish krona in the payment sector. The deputy governor of the Swedish Central Bank, Per Jansson, stated that without convenient digital payment options for the krona, it may struggle to compete with cross-border digital payment tools, posing long-term risks to monetary policy and financial stability. Currently, only 5% of Swedes used cash in their most recent purchase. The Swedish Central Bank has not yet decided whether to support the issuance of a digital krona, with the final decision resting with parliament. Relevant legislative and preparatory work is expected to take at least five years.
