Jameson Lopp: Warning to Bitcoin holders not to give up self-storing
2026-10-23 13:47:59
According to CoinMeta, Casa Chief Security Officer Jameson Lopp warned Bitcoin holders in an open letter to Casa customers and the Bitcoin community on October 22nd not to abandon self-management due to a series of cryptocurrency wallet security incidents and to rely instead on ETF and third-party custodians. He pointed out that although recent attacks have raised concerns about managing private keys, this does not mean that direct control over Bitcoin holdings should be abandoned. Lopp emphasized that transferring control of private keys only shifts responsibility to others, and Bitcoin ETF merely provides indirect access to the price of cryptocurrencies without granting users direct control over the underlying assets. He also mentioned that many of these attack incidents were already known to security professionals, but their occurrence in actual cases makes it harder for ordinary holders to ignore these risks. Lopp advised Bitcoin holders to review their current settings and distribute their keys across different geographical locations and hardware supply chains to reduce dependence on any single device or location.
