According to CoinMeta, Chinese courts are seeking to confiscate 61,896 bitcoins, valued at approximately $5.6 billion, in connection with a financing fraud case that resulted in losses of nearly 20 billion yuan. The Second Intermediate People's Court of Tianjin has accepted the prosecutor's request to seize bitcoins and other assets related to Qian Zhimin. Between 2014 and 2017, Qian Zhimin raised over 40.378 billion yuan (about $5.6 billion) by selling investment products that promised high returns, attracting more than 102,000 investors and causing losses of nearly 19.977 billion yuan. The prosecution alleges that these funds were used to repay early investors, purchase bitcoins, and fund fraudulent projects. Qian Zhimin left China in July 2017, taking with her a computer containing a bitcoin wallet, and later settled in the UK. The confiscation request also includes cash, jewelry, and other assets. British authorities have seized assets related to this case, and some of the cryptocurrency holdings have been converted into other forms. Victims can seek compensation through Chinese procedures, and the court has set a six-month registration period for victims; a hearing is expected to be held after the end of this period.
