Strong loan demand from Japanese companies may leave room for the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates further

According to CoinMeta, a survey released by the Bank of Japan on Thursday showed that corporate borrowers from major Japanese banks have an increased demand for funds compared to three months ago, indicating that recent interest rate hikes have not yet hindered lending activities. On the eve of the Bank of Japan's policy meeting next week, these data further reinforce the market consensus that the BOJ will continue to raise the current interest rate level of 1.25% in order to reduce the risk of inflation exceeding its target. Shigeto Nagai, the head of Japan economic research at the Oxford Institute for Economics, stated that the overall resilience of the Japanese economy to rising interest rates may enable the BOJ to further raise the policy rate to above 1.75%, thereby preventing the yen from weakening further and avoiding a disconnection in inflation expectations.
