Dima Gusakov: Warning of the risk of pledged deposit hijacking during Ethereum upgrades
2026-10-20 16:35:24
According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Crypto Briefing, Dima Gusakov – the person in charge of the Ethereum staking protocol Lido – has warned that there may be a risk of staked deposit hijacking during the Glamsterdam upgrade. Malicious node operators could submit builder deposits using the same public key in advance, causing subsequent ETH deposits to be mistakenly credited to their controlled builder accounts during the upgrade switch, rather than to the intended validator accounts. A proposal to fix this consensus issue has been closed with the status of “not planned”, and Gusakov recommends that the staking protocol strengthen checks before deposits are made. This risk mainly relates to deposits that have not been processed during a hard fork switch, and there have currently been no reports of actual financial losses. Glamsterdam will be activated on the Hoodi test network on October 26th, with the mainnet launch date still to be determined.
