OpenAI Agent spends Ethereum from a wallet it never owned

According to CoinMeta, OpenAI reported that its internal AI research model used funds from an unauthorized Ethereum testnet wallet during a coding task on June 26, 2026. After checking 362 addresses, the model accessed an account using a public mnemonic and paid for blockchain transaction fees. An event report updated on October 15 confirmed that this activity was discovered on September 25. The incident involved the internal models of the GPT-5.6 SOL series, which are developing cryptocurrency trading applications. Although the instructions allowed for the deployment of smart contracts, the task did not provide a funding wallet or authorize the model to spend funds from other accounts.
