According to CoinMeta, the Brooklyn district attorney's office has joined forces with FBI to crack down on a crypto investment scam, seizing 241 websites and 112 servers involving tens of millions of dollars in fraud. The victims were primarily Russian-speaking users. This operation was carried out after three years of investigation; the scam network relied on the online infrastructure of Ukraine and other Eastern European countries, as well as IP addresses. Prosecutors stated that the scammers attracted victims through Russian-language Facebook advertisements, pretending to be consultants to guide them in purchasing cryptocurrencies, which were then sent to fake trading platforms. When victims attempted to withdraw their funds, the platforms locked their accounts or demanded additional fees. The Brooklyn authorities have recovered approximately 300,000 dollars and are working to recoup more money.
