Economist: AI is a paradox of skill inequality for Generation Z workers
2026-10-10 21:06:26
According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Fortune, economist David Otto (David Autor) stated that artificial intelligence (AI) has not become the tool for skill equality that was anticipated for Generation Z workers; instead, it may lead to skill inequality. In a three-month experiment, AI improved the draft quality of patent lawyers, but when researchers retracted the tool and tested independent judgment, only experienced lawyers showed an average improvement, while junior lawyers did not. Otto pointed out that AI may be a tool that appears to promote equality, but it is actually a tool that contributes to skill inequality, as only those practitioners who already possess a basic framework of thinking can enhance their skills with its help. The study did not specifically focus on Generation Z, but its results have the greatest impact on early-career workers. Otto also mentioned that AI will not lead to mass unemployment; rather, it may eliminate certain professional fields while creating new ones.
