The conviction of the euro bank interest rate related to Bittar has been overturned, and SFO faces new setbacks.

According to CoinMeta, the conviction of former Deutsche Bank trader Christian Bittar for manipulating euro bank rates was overturned on Friday, despite his guilty plea to the charges in 2018. This ruling overturns eight out of nine rate manipulation convictions in the UK, dealing another setback to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Furthermore, this ruling raises a thorny question: how should courts handle cases of misconduct, especially when jurors have been misled? Bittar was sentenced to five years and four months in prison in 2018 for conspiracy to fraud. He is the first trader to have a conviction overturned in cases related to euro bank rates or the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR). Bittar's lawyer argued that the prosecution did not need to prove that Bittar agreed to submit “false or misleading” rates. The spokesperson for Jason Williams stated that the institution would have preferred a different outcome but respects this ruling.
