Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) pushes to expand its authority to investigate crypto asset information

According to CoinMeta, as reported by Forbes, the UK Tax and Customs Administration (HMRC) is pushing to expand its authority to investigate crypto asset information. It plans to allow tax authorities to directly request customer data from crypto asset service providers and update the rules for inspecting software and electronic records. UK crypto tax software company Recap warns that the proposed regulations have an overly broad definition of service providers, which may include non-hosted wallet software, blockchain browsers, hardware wallet manufacturers, and tax software providers. Since Bitcoin transaction records are public and transparent, once investors' names, addresses, and tax identities are linked to their wallet addresses on the blockchain, it could expose their long-term asset activity records, increasing the risk of data breaches, extortion, and even personal attacks.
