According to CoinMeta, Z.AI has announced the open-sourcing of its AI programming assistant ZCode. Previously, users discovered that this tool uploaded the entire workspace (including the Git history) to Alibaba Cloud. ZCode was reported to have packaged the entire codebase into an encrypted snapshot and attempted to upload it to Alibaba Cloud as well. Analysis showed that one of these snapshots contained 42,411 files, among which the git directory accounted for 86.6% of the total size. This release comes shortly after developer Ferstar published a reverse engineering report on September 18th, which documented that disabling the “codebase snapshot index” did not prevent the uploading of snapshots. Z.AI stated that the related issues have been fixed, and they have open-sourced ZCode under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing clients to conduct inspections, but they have not verified how the previously uploaded data was handled.
