The European Central Bank launches the Pontes platform for central bank currency settlement of blockchain transactions
2026-09-21 18:56:45
According to CoinMeta, the European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a platform to settle blockchain-based wholesale transactions in central bank money, and is also preparing to invest its own funds of 23 billion euros in digital securities. This service connects the distributed ledger technology platforms used by financial market participants with the services of the euro system, allowing transactions involving tokenized assets to be settled in central bank euros. Deutsche Bank, Santander Bank, and the clearing group Clearing House Interbank Payment System (CHIPS) are among the first institutions to complete integration with this platform. Initially, the platform will operate between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Central European Time on weekdays, and the ECB plans to extend its operating hours and functions over time. The project aims to provide financial institutions with an experimental environment for issuing, trading, and settling securities on distributed ledgers. Unlike settlements made through private stablecoins or other commercial currencies, this platform offers participants access to central bank money.
