According to CoinMeta, as reported by Chainalysis, the amount of malicious code written onto public blockchains has increased by more than five times within a year, with national-level attackers accounting for 51% in the second quarter of 2026. Since the release of the open-source model from China AI in mid-2025, the number of instances of malicious instructions being written onto blockchains has risen from an average of 2.06 times per day to 11.1 times per day, affecting five different blockchain networks. More than 15 attack groups have been identified. This phenomenon is referred to as the "blockchain spam inbox" (blockchain dead drop). North Korea unc5342 has deployed malicious instructions on Tron, Aptos, and BNB Chain, while individuals associated with Iran's intelligence ministry have inserted such instructions into Bitcoin transactions.
