According to CoinMeta, as reported by U.Today, forecasting market giant Polymarket faced a large-scale fraud incident earlier this year, where criminals attempted to transfer at least $10 million through its US platform using stolen debit cards. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the fraud was exposed in February, and the criminals attached the stolen cards to thousands of Polymarket accounts, attempting to convert them into bets. During the peak of the fraud, payment processor Checkout.com rejected over 80% of the Polymarket deposits due to their suspicious nature. Employees raised concerns internally, and both current and former employees stated that CEO Shayne Coplan continued to emphasize growth despite compliance warnings. Fraud levels remained high after February, and Polymarket subsequently introduced stricter debit card restrictions. In June, Polymarket confirmed that hackers had stolen some users' funds, involving a security vulnerability with a third-party supplier. The company also reported an incident in July involving nearly 500 users, where an engineering flaw allowed attackers to access accounts using stolen personal information.
