The announcement indicates that Luno, DCG's cryptocurrency trading platform, has initiated a new round of restructuring, planning to lay off approximately 20% of its global workforce. Company management stated that this move is primarily aimed at cost reduction and redirecting more resources to institutional clients and enterprise-facing business lines.

Resource shift agencies and B2B

Luno CEO James Lanigan confirmed the change on July 28, but did not disclose the specific number of employees affected, nor which regions or departments were involved. He stated that changes in automation investment and operational methods have altered the staffing requirements of the trading platform.

Luno has stated that it will continue to invest in compliance, core infrastructure, and some retail products, while expanding its services to other businesses. Its institutional platform primarily provides liquidity and trading infrastructure to professional clients. According to the company's website, Luno serves approximately 15 million users globally.

The scale of the layoffs was not disclosed.

Lanigan described a leaner organizational structure, better suited to the current business direction, as "necessary and appropriate." However, Luno has not yet announced how much cost savings the restructuring is expected to generate, whether there will be restructuring expenses, or when the layoffs will be completed.

Currently, the core information that can be confirmed by the outside world is that the layoff ratio is approximately 20%, but the absolute number of affected employees has not yet been disclosed. More specific data will likely emerge after further statements from the company, progress of employee negotiations, or changes to the business services of its affiliated organizations.

At least 12 companies adjusted their personnel in July.

According to public tracking by CryptoJobsList, at least 12 crypto or crypto-related companies have laid off employees or restructured in July, including Luno, Gnosis, Uphold, BitMart, BitMEX, Exodus, Polygon Labs, AscendEX, Zapper, and Yield Guild Games.

  • BitMart: 550 people
  • BitMEX: 160 people
  • Uphold: 85 people

Of the six companies that have disclosed specific figures, a total of 894 jobs have been affected. This statistic is still incomplete because companies like Luno and Gnosis did not disclose precise numbers. CryptoJobsList also records that since 2026, 47 companies have disclosed a total of over 7,254 layoffs.

Gnosis is also downsizing its team.

In addition to Luno, Gnosis also confirmed staff reductions in its Q2 report released on July 17. Co-founder Friederike Ernst stated that the team decided to scale back the Gnosis App after evaluating its growth performance.

Gnosis plans to spin off the Gnosis App from Gnosis Ltd in the third quarter, with a smaller team seeking DAO funding to operate as an independent company. Whether this plan will ultimately materialize, and how many employees will be retained, remains uncertain.

Additional information:BitGo had previously laid off nearly 15% of its staff in June and further focused its resources on security, stablecoins, settlement, and AI infrastructure.
