XRPL is pushing AI-powered agent payments closer to enterprise use cases. t54, who is in charge of the XRPL x402 Facilitator, stated that AI payments based on XRPL now support Mastercard's Verifiable Intent standard, adding authorization verification and risk checks before on-chain transfers.

Verify authorization before payment

At the heart of this integration is enabling developers to attach verifiable authorization credentials to AI-initiated payments. Unlike regular wallet signatures, the system can not only prove who approved the payment, but also indicate the available credit limit, applicable conditions, and the specific purchase transaction corresponding to the authorization.

The relevant credentials first enter the x402 Facilitator and are then sent to Trustline's risk engine for verification. Only after passing the preset rules will the payment enter the final settlement process. This means that there is an additional machine-readable review step before the funds are actually put on the blockchain.

Three-tiered document verification of payment terms

This mechanism is built on the Mastercard Verifiable Intent framework and is part of its Agentic Commerce initiative. The system uses a three-tier SD-JWT credential structure, corresponding to L1, L2, and L3 respectively.

  • L1: Confirm who authorized the payment
  • L2: Confirm credit limit or restrictions
  • L3: Confirm the specific approved transactions

With these three layers of information, the AI agent no longer relies solely on wallet control to complete payments, but can instead carry a set of verifiable authorization conditions. This type of design is primarily used to mitigate the operational risks associated with the irreversibility of on-chain transactions.

XRPL continues to expand AI payment scenarios

Verifiable Intents are not mandatory. x402 payment processes without accompanying documentation will still function normally. The XRPL Facilitator will only automatically submit a complete set of L1 to L3 documentation to Trustline for verification if the transaction is accompanied by such documentation.

Earlier this year, XRPL introduced x402, allowing AI agents to use XRP or Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin to pay for digital services such as APIs, AI inference, cloud computing, and subscriptions. With this integration with Mastercard, XRPL's AI payment process is further geared towards enterprise-level scenarios.

RippleX's engineering lead previously predicted that proxy transaction volume on XRPL could increase from approximately 1 million transactions currently to between 10 million and 100 million transactions in the next few years. The authorization and risk control modules integrated by t54 are precisely preparing the infrastructure for this growth in automated payments.
