A White House official said on Wednesday evening that the special committee, appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump to investigate alleged false statements by Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook ( Lisa Cook ), has rescheduled the hearing that was originally scheduled for Thursday of this week and for which Cook's attendance was expected, to December 14th.
The official stated that the White House rescheduled the hearing at the request of Cook's side. Cook's lawyer, Abbie Lowell ( Abbe Lowell ), stated in a letter on October 14th that some issues regarding the committee and its investigation must be resolved before the hearing can take place.
At that time, Lowell stated that the hearing would not take place until at least December. It is still unclear whether Cook will agree to attend the rescheduled hearing. Trump attempted to remove Cook from her position in August 2025 but was not successful.
The New York Times was the first to report on the postponement of Cook's hearing.
In early October, Trump established an "investigation committee" ( committee of inquiry ) to investigate allegations that Cook made false statements regarding "one or more mortgage loan instruments." Cook denies any improper conduct.
It has been over three months since Trump established this committee since the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. At that time, the Supreme Court ruled that, at this stage, the president does not have the authority to remove Cook from the board of directors of this central bank. The Supreme Court upheld an order from a lower court, which prohibits his removal during the trial of a lawsuit regarding Cook's dismissal.
The Supreme Court did not rule on whether Trump ultimately has the power to fire Federal Reserve governors, but stated that his first attempt to fire Cook failed because Cook was not given due process to challenge that decision.
The investigation committee established by Trump may aim to demonstrate to the Supreme Court that Cook has received such due process.
CNBC has sought comment from Lowell.
