Mercado Bitcoin announced that account access will be gradually restored on Monday, and pledged to cover the losses incurred due to the hacker attack.
In the initial phase, customers will only be able to view their own holdings, and withdrawals and transactions will remain suspended until the security checks are completed.
Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin stated that it will resume access to customer accounts starting Monday after suffering a hacker attack. Blockchain analysts estimate that the incident resulted in the theft of over $46 million in assets.
Mercado Bitcoin stated in a declaration provided to Cointelegraph that customers will initially be able to re-access their accounts through their website to view balances, statements, positions, and investment details. Transfer, withdrawal, and trading functions will be restored at a later stage, but this is subject to passing independent security tests.
Mercado Bitcoin also promised to use company funds to compensate for the assets affected by this security vulnerability and stated that with the assistance of the industry, over $15 million of the stolen funds have been frozen.
The company stated, "Our trading desk is preparing to carry out the necessary repurchases in both domestic and international markets."
Prior to the release of this update, the exchange disclosed a security incident on Monday. Attackers transferred funds from the company's hot wallet and customer recharge addresses through conventional transfer methods.
When discussing liquidity, Mercado stated that the company has a strong cash position and mentioned that a $20 million investment from the stablecoin issuer Tether has enhanced its financial strength. This investment will be used to support operational expansion.
