The $6.3 billion hack incident at Binance may accelerate a shift in the way investors value cryptocurrency companies, leading to higher premiums for custodian service providers and the infrastructure required to securely hold and protect digital assets.

Since the beginning of this year, a significant part of the evolution in the crypto industry has been related to companies gradually moving away from their dependence on transaction volumes and transaction fees, and instead focusing on building infrastructure that connects digital assets with traditional finance. The security vulnerability that occurred last Thursday has added a new dimension, making network security, custody, compliance, and the resilience of balance sheets even more prominent.

Importantly, this Binance incident is not a negation of cryptocurrency itself, nor is it a fraud case led by management like that at the end of 2022. On the contrary, Binance's management took prompt action to control the fallout, protect customers, and pledged to use the exchange's own resources to compensate for the losses.

Anbin's CEO, Richard Teng, stated on Tuesday in the CNBC program “Squawk on the Street” that the company has already replenished 98% of the affected assets, which amount to $63.4 billion, and is currently continuing to purchase the remaining assets with lower liquidity.

The management's response, coupled with the efforts made by other sectors of the industry to boost confidence, helped prevent a security vulnerability from evolving into a broader crisis of confidence. For example, Tether, Circle, Ripple, etc., quickly froze or restricted access to approximately $3 billion in stolen assets; Coinbase prevented transfers to affected wallets and provided direct assistance to Binance.

This hacking incident may even shape the next phase of encrypted infrastructure transactions. The new winners may not be just the companies with the largest number of users, the highest volume of transactions, or the most assets under management, but rather those enterprises that can prove their ability to protect these assets under extreme pressure.

Cybersecurity and Protection

ClearStreet Senior Analyst Owen Lau said to CNBC: "Which company has the resources to invest in network security and protect customers' funds? For smaller companies, this can be more difficult, because once these crypto companies become infrastructure-oriented enterprises, providing the underlying support for tokenization... they need to have compliance and control measures in place to ensure that incidents like hacking do not occur, or to minimize their impact. Larger companies have more resources and may therefore have some advantages."

Hosting is the core.

As institutional investors increasingly embrace digital assets, broader adoption depends on whether the market believes that these assets can be safely held, accessed, and transferred. The Binance incident has highlighted the importance of such infrastructure and may also increase the market's demand for professional custodian institutions and platforms with mature asset protection capabilities.

Coinbase has been operating a specialized institutional custody business since 2018. Circle entered the custody business this year, after previously being approved by the US Federal Reserve to operate as a trust bank. In the past few years, Ripple and Kraken have also launched custody services.

Even small players are competing.

However, small players are also competing in this field. The small-cap crypto exchange Gemini Space Station has been providing custody services since 2019. BitGo Holdings, established in 2013, is one of the earliest participants in the field of institutional crypto custody and infrastructure and is known for its security and service to large institutions.

Lau indicates that this transformation may also drive industry consolidation, as companies will seek to acquire relevant capabilities, deepen infrastructure services, and gain the scale necessary to compete.

Morgan Stanley believes that a change of greater structural significance could be the separation of hosting and execution.

In a report on Monday, the analyst Felix Stratmann stated: "Throughout the history of crypto exchanges, platforms that have engaged in vertical integration have provided trading, custody, and settlement services simultaneously, which concentrates operational risks. Repeated security vulnerabilities may prompt investors to shift their assets to independent custodians while continuing to trade on centralized exchanges." Here, CEXs refers to centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.

Stratmann said, "This will preserve the role of centralized exchanges as venues for liquidity and execution, and it may also be beneficial for regulated custodian institutions, including banks, as institutional investors will place greater emphasis on asset segregation, operational resilience, and investor protection."
