Bitcoin's white paper marks its 18th anniversary of release. Today is a historic day: its pseudonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, published the first blueprint for digital cash.
On October 31, 2008, a nine-page white paper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" was released, proposing a radical concept: it is possible to transfer value electronically without the need for traditional financial intermediaries.
On the 18th anniversary of Bitcoin's public debut to the world, Bitcoin supporters, exchanges, and the broader crypto community are sharing celebratory messages on the social platform X.
Bitcoin supporter, Chairman Strategy Michael Saylor, wrote on X: "Happy Bitcoin White Paper Day. It's been 18 years."
One of the most prominent features of the white paper is that it fixes the total supply of Bitcoin at 21 million coins. This pre-set issuance structure is what distinguishes Bitcoin from traditional monetary systems; in traditional systems, central authorities can increase the money supply.
A post on X by a major US cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase, emphasized this: “21,000,000. No increase ever. Happy Bitcoin White Paper Day.”
Coinbase also wrote: 'Today marks the 18th anniversary of the release of the Bitcoin white paper. This day changed everything.'
Stablecoin issuer Tether wrote: "On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto explained Bitcoin to the world in just nine pages. Today, we are explaining it to everyone else. Two pizzas, 10,000 BTC, 21 million coins, and a private key that you will never share with anyone. Everything you need to know is contained in a comic book. Happy 18th birthday to the Bitcoin white paper."
The encryption platform Uphold wrote: "Nine pages of content that challenge the entire traditional financial system. Happy Bitcoin White Paper Day."
Bitcoin is now a $1.55 trillion asset.
The Bitcoin white paper laid the foundation for the launch of the network in January 2009. At that time, Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first block of Bitcoin and introduced the initial units of this cryptocurrency.
On January 3, 2009, when Bitcoin was launched, it had no market value nor an official trading price. Over the years, Bitcoin has evolved from a niche technological experiment into a globally recognized digital asset. Its emergence has also spurred the development of thousands of cryptocurrencies, blockchain applications, and decentralized financial systems.
According to CoinMarketCap data, the current trading price of this cryptocurrency is $77,310, and its market value is 1.55 trillion US dollars.
