A survey conducted by DateMyAge among 1,000 adults over the age of 50 found that many have not encountered a new person of genuine interest in many years, and their concerns about online fraud and privacy risks even exceed their fear of loneliness. The survey also indicates that family support may help them take the first step towards making friends online.

Los Angeles, October 30th ( PRNewswire ) – As people age, making new connections can become daunting, especially for those who haven't encountered someone they're truly interested in for many years. After a long period without making new friends, some may feel unsure about where to start, doubt whether it's still possible to build meaningful relationships, and worry about cybersecurity risks and the threat of fraud.

For platforms targeting mature singles, DateMyAge, understanding the emotional and practical barriers involved in building relationships online is key to helping people feel more confident in making connections. To address these challenges, DateMyAge conducted a survey among adults over the age of 50 regarding their experiences, concerns, and attitudes towards establishing new connections online.

Main findings

  • 57% of people stated that in the past decade, they have not encountered any new individuals who have truly piqued their interest.
  • 33% of people have thought about trying to establish contact online, but ultimately did not register.
  • 52% of people don't know whether their children would agree to them establishing contact online.
  • 15% of people believe that children will feel they are too old to pursue online relationships.
  • 8% of people are concerned that their children might think this is a sign of disrespect towards the other parent.
  • 11% of people have not asked their children or younger individuals to help them set up their profiles, but they are willing to accept assistance.
  • 72% of people say that being scammed online scares them more than spending the rest of their lives alone.
  • 47% of people list fear of being scammed as the biggest obstacle to registration.
  • 32% of people believe that privacy concerns are the biggest obstacle to establishing connections online.

Many people haven't met a new partner in many years.

More than one-third of the respondents stated that it has been over 10 years since they last encountered a new prospect that truly interested them; another 21% admitted that they could not remember exactly when that was.

The survey results show that many elderly people have not experienced meaningful romantic relationships for many years.

Although the interest in companionship still exists, after being away from social relationships for a long time, the process of making new friends again can seem unfamiliar.

Family support can help singles over the age of 50 take the first step.

For single individuals over the age of 50 who are unsure how to start building relationships online, adult children can be an important source of support. However, many are not sure how their family members will react: 52% of them don't know whether their children would approve, 25% think their children would be happy for them, and only 15% expect their children to think they are too old to build relationships online.

Some people are also willing to accept practical help. Although 4% of people have asked their children or younger individuals to assist them in setting up their profiles, another 11% would be very happy to receive such assistance.

During holidays, family reunions may provide an opportunity to bridge this gap. Helping parents create profiles, explaining how the platform works, or simply encouraging them to make new friends can make this process seem more accessible. For some people, the first step towards new connections might begin with a conversation at home.

The fear of fraud outweighs the fear of being alone.

The most striking finding of this survey is that 72% of respondents stated that being scammed online scares them more than living alone for the rest of their lives.

People often assume that loneliness is the biggest concern for single individuals in their later years, but survey results indicate that trust and security are the more important priorities.

For many elderly people, what worries them is not whether they can find someone online, but whether that person is truly what they claim to be.

Privacy concerns are still preventing people from taking this step.

Nearly a third of the respondents stated that privacy concerns were the biggest factor preventing them from registering and meeting others online.

Many elderly people have spent decades building up their personal and financial security. Sharing personal information online can make them feel a great risk, especially when meeting strangers through digital platforms.

Many people may still have a need for social interaction even in their older years, but stepping forward due to concerns about fraud can become a challenge. What's important here is to approach the process of building relationships online with the same caution and time investment as one would with any other new relationship.
