Los Angeles, October 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — As the cost of living squeezes retirement budgets, Los Angeles-based tech startup One Stop Swap is planning to launch the “One Stop Swap Second Act” initiative, aimed at helping older Americans generate additional income from home while also bringing new sellers and inventory to the second-hand resale economy.

Research shows that this demand and market opportunity exist simultaneously:

  • 48% of retirees returning to the workplace stated that making money was their primary reason; among adults aged 50 and above who are currently working or seeking employment, 41% listed daily living expenses as one of the main reasons ( AARP, February 2026).
  • 67% of older workers surveyed believe that finding another job will be very difficult ( AARP , 2026 ).
  • 60% of adults aged 50 and above indicate that technology products are not designed with this age group in mind ( AARP Technology Research ).
  • By 2030, the global second-hand clothing market is expected to reach a scale of 393 billion US dollars; in 2025, the growth rate of the second-hand clothing market in the United States was nearly four times that of the overall clothing retail market ( ThredUp , 2026).

One Stop Swap, co-founder with Stephen Bikoff, stated: "When I first conceived One Stop Swap, my goal was never just to create another shopping app. It's about helping people. There are many valuable items lying idle at home, while people are struggling with their bills. I wanted to drive a change in that situation."

One Stop Swap Second Act: Lowering the selling threshold

According to this proposal, the project will provide a support desk for elderly sellers, guidance for first-time sellers, tutorials suitable for beginners, and anti-fraud education. The company is also researching the option of having family members assist in posting products, as well as integrating with the existing door-to-door pickup service provided by the United States Postal Service ( USPS ); this service can collect prepaid packages that meet certain requirements at eligible addresses.

Bikoff added, "We don't want to just hand over an app to a 78-year-old person and then wish them good luck. We want to be able to answer their questions and help them complete their first transaction. If someone no longer wants to drive, or is unable to handle an 8-hour shift, technology should open doors for them, rather than creating more obstacles."

New sellers and sources of inventory

This plan may also become part of the platform's growth strategy. Older Americans may have clothing, jewelry, tools, collectibles, and household items that they have not posted online in decades. Helping first-time sellers get involved could expand the range of products available, attract buyers, and promote repeat transactions.

One Stop Swap plans to explore promotion through elderly organizations, retirement communities, and professionals who assist in reducing living sizes, considering them as potential and cost-effective channels for acquiring sellers. However, the company indicates that these channels have not yet been verified.

Bikoff said, "More sellers mean more products, more choices, and more potential transactions. Helping people and building a successful business are not necessarily separate goals."

Progress before launch and economic model

Before its planned launch across the United States in mid-2027, approximately 3,400 potential members have completed pre-registration. The first batch of 5,000 founding members are expected to receive a six-month exemption from platform fees for both buyers and sellers, subject to the project terms.

The company plans to charge a 3% seller platform fee for standard cash transactions, and additionally collect a 3% platform fee from buyers separately; before considering costs and adjustments, the total fee rate is 6%.
