Atlanta and Green Bay, Wisconsin, October 29 (Reuters) / PRNewswire / — Norfolk Southern Corporation ( Norfolk Southern Corporation , NYSE : NSC ) and Schneider National , Inc . ( NYSE : SNDR ), a leading provider of multimodal transport, transportation, and logistics services, today announced a strategic agreement to combine its 35 years of multimodal transport experience, professional company drivers, own assets, and logistics capabilities with Norfolk Southern's extensive multimodal transport network in the eastern United States and its ongoing infrastructure investments.
This collaboration brings together two networks that focus on coverage, stability, and customer growth, at a time when the market's demand for multimodal transport solutions is continuously rising. Schneider's multimodal transport services are supported by the company's own tractors, approximately 23,900 chassis, and 26,800 containers. It has over 60 multimodal transport railway hubs in North America, and its specialized company's shuttle drivers handle more than 90% of the domestic shuttle transportation business for Schneider. In the third quarter of 2026, Norfolk Southern saw a 3% increase in multimodal transport volume, driven by stable consumer demand, favorable truck market conditions, and network improvements.

Schneider, Vice President of Multimodal Transport and Logistics Execution, stated: "The multimodal transport network of Schneider is built on a strong asset base, which provides customers with the control, consistency, and reliability they rely on. As we transition our main eastern railway carriers to Norfolk Southern, we will expand our coverage of key markets, enhance network flexibility, and create new opportunities to better serve our customers. This will strengthen Schneider's competitive position and improve the reliable service experience that customers expect."
As one of the largest multimodal transport carriers in North America, Schneider leverages over thirty years of experience in multimodal transportation to help customers transport goods with the reliability of trucks and the efficiency of rail. In addition to its own containers, lightweight chassis, fleet of short-haul vehicles, and drivers, Schneider also supports its operational performance through preferential rail access, proactive execution across long-distance routes, satellite tracking for real-time visibility, and advanced security measures. Aligning with Norfolk Southern, this reflects Schneider's commitment to continuously adapting to customer needs and changes in freight flows. Norfolk Southern's extensive eastern network has expanded Schneider's coverage, creating new opportunities for growth with existing customers, attracting new freight sources, and transforming full-truck shipments into multimodal transport.
Nordfolk Southern's Chief Commercial Officer Ed Elkins stated: "Customers are considering multimodal transport in a more comprehensive way than ever before, and we are investing ahead of time to meet this demand. By combining Nordfolk Southern's network coverage, terminal investments, and capacity with Schneider's mature logistics expertise, own equipment, and customer relationships, we are creating new opportunities to facilitate the flow of goods across North America and making railways an even more important part of the domestic supply chain."
The agreement is built upon Norfolk Southern's strategy of making early investments to support customer growth, covering its multimodal transportation network across 22 states. Recent and ongoing projects include: a new service between Cincinnati and Atlanta; the conversion of routes to accommodate double-deck containers with height restrictions through the East Edge corridor; as well as expansions at facilities in Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, and Illinois. In locations such as Atlanta, Louisville, Harrisburg, Croxton, Chesapeake, Charlotte, Chicago, and St. Louis, Norfolk Southern is also improving road surfaces, lighting, storage areas, maintenance facilities, truck entry and exit routes, and security systems to enhance reliability, reduce driver turnaround times, and improve the station experience that customers rely on daily.
