Bithumb Discloses Data Breach After Internal System Intrusion: Report

This intrusion affected their internal mobile system, which is used by employees for work and information sharing.

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb is investigating the extent of data leakage that occurred earlier this week following a hack on its internal mobility system, Yonhap reported on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News, citing industry insiders, Bithumb discovered that its internal communication system had been compromised on Tuesday. This platform is used by employees for internal communications, and the company reported the incident to the Korea Internet Promotion Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission on the same day.

The exchange is investigating the scope of this attack, including whether any member data has been leaked.

Bithumb told Yonhap News Agency: "We are analyzing the exact scope, including whether member information is involved. We will issue an official announcement this morning. However, our internal work system is separate from the virtual asset trading system, so customers' virtual assets cannot be accessed through this intrusion."

Cointelegraph has contacted Bithumb to seek further comments.

This incident has exacerbated a recent wave of cyberattacks in South Korea's financial sector.

During a meeting on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Financial Services Commission of South Korea, Lee Chang-yong, stated that as of October 14, 16 financial companies in South Korea had been subjected to cyberattacks.

The Korea Times reported that asset management company Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daeshin Securities have also recently become victims of cyberattacks.

Daxin Securities stated that the personal and credit information of 38,490 customers has been leaked. Mirae Asset Global Investments indicates that some network systems have been protected from abnormal external access, and an investigation into the matter is underway. The company claimed that investor information has not been affected, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency.
