According to CNBC, which cites informed sources, Microsoft is offering a new voluntary resignation program to approximately 60,000 employees in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, covering about 27% of its total workforce of 223,000 employees. This time, the eligibility has been extended to include vice presidents, whereas in April of this year, the retirement program only applied to senior directors. Employees need to make their decision by early December and must leave their positions by December 31. This move comes at a time when Microsoft's quarterly capital expenditures exceed $50 billion, a significant increase from $34.9 billion in the same period last year, and the company will announce its quarterly financial results on Wednesday.

Microsoft to Lay Off Employees in 2026: Buyout Plan Extended to India and Vice President Level, Launched a Few Days Before Financial Report

According to a source familiar with the plan, cited by CNBC, Microsoft is attempting to provide financial support for its ambitious AI initiative and has offered exit packages to more than a quarter of its employees.

Reports indicate that approximately 60,000 employees in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom are eligible for a new voluntary severance compensation program. This accounts for about 27% of Microsoft's total workforce of 223,000 employees.

The scope of application has now been extended to the vice president level, whereas in the retirement plan from April of this year, the eligibility was only up to the senior director level. Reports indicate that in the April plan, over 30% of eligible U.S. employees chose to accept it.

If the acceptance rate this time is similar, the number of employees leaving may be around 18,000.

Employees must make a decision by early December and leave the company by December 31st.

At the time of this announcement, Microsoft's quarterly capital expenditure had exceeded $50 billion, which is higher than the $34.9 billion in the same period last year.

Microsoft will announce its quarterly earnings on Wednesday.

Tech stocks continue to rebound, with market attention turning to the Fed's difficult choices
Driven by the popularity related to Anthropic, NASDAQ continued to rise for a second consecutive day, and global tech stocks also saw a boost. At the same time, the market is watching the Federal Reserve's meeting this week, with a general expectation that it will adopt a hawkish stance of holding back, which would almost certainly pave the way for a rate hike in December. Reports also mention that Microsoft is offering voluntary resignation programs to some employees in order to balance investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure with capital efficiency.

Netflix Layoffs Reveal What American Business World Got Wrong
Last week, Netflix cut about 1,000 positions and replaced its Chief Content Officer with Bela Bajaria. The article argues that companies do not need to retain inappropriate positions when laying off employees, but they should also not treat ruthlessness as a management philosophy; in an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping employment, it is even more important to treat departing employees with dignity.
