CoinShares Says Bitcoin is Under Pressure, but "Difficulties" Do Not Equal "Bearish Outlook"

CoinShares Research Director James Butterfill stated that Bitcoin is facing difficulties in the short term, but this does not mean a "bearish outlook on fundamentals." He believes that inflation remains high, and the economy is resilient enough, making it difficult for the Federal Reserve to change its stance; under such hawkish re-pricing, Bitcoin and the broader digital asset market are declining.

Bitcoin prices fell this week due to relatively strong latest inflation data.

However, James Butterfill, the head of research at European asset management firm CoinShares, stated that although the short-term situation for this world's largest cryptocurrency is "difficult," there is no "fundamental pessimism" regarding it.

In a report on Friday, Butterfill stated that the short-term challenges faced by Bitcoin stem from a macroeconomic environment that is in an awkward middle ground: inflation is still too high, making it difficult for the Federal Reserve to ease its policies; yet the economy is resilient enough that it is not sufficient to force a shift in policy.

He wrote, "Bitcoin and the broader digital asset market have declined due to the subsequent hawkish repricing, which serves as a reminder that Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to monetary policy in the short term."

The price of Bitcoin recently reached $81,473, with a 2% decline over the past seven days.

After the release on Wednesday of data showing that U.S. consumer price inflation in September was higher than expected, the price of this leading cryptocurrency fell.

Subsequently, on Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor reported that U.S. producer prices in September recorded the fastest growth rate in over four years.

Rising inflation has dragged down the price of Bitcoin, as higher inflation implies that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates, and higher borrowing costs will limit the liquidity required for this digital currency to rise.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates in September and will hold a meeting at the end of this month.

However, Butterfill added that investors should remain patient and advised them to focus on the long term, rather than reacting to any single weekly data point.

He wrote, "For investors, this means that the coming weeks should be viewed as a data-driven period, rather than a trend; the size of digital asset exposures should also be based on strategic allocation, rather than a single piece of data from this week."

Bitcoin was in a bear market in the first half of 2026, but after a significant rise in August and September, it recorded its best quarter in several years. Analysts now say that with the trading price once again above the 365-day moving average, this leading cryptocurrency has returned to a bull market.
