According to a recent announcement by authorities, three soldiers from the Canadian Armed Forces are alleged to be involved in a violent kidnapping case related to crypto assets that occurred in Toronto. Currently, seven suspects are facing a total of 82 criminal charges.
On July 25th, the owner of a cryptocurrency exchange in the北约k area of Toronto was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint.
The Toronto Police Department stated that the victim was walking towards his car, which was parked near Finch Avenue East and Bayview Avenue in Toronto, when he was subsequently taken away against his will by a group of suspects.
According to the police, during the kidnapping, the suspect is alleged to have put handcuffs on the victim and subjected them to beatings in an attempt to force them to access the victim's encrypted assets as well as security tools related to their business.
In the end, the victim was released, but was told not to call the police.
The police stated that it is currently unclear whether these suspected attackers were successful in obtaining any encrypted assets, nor is it known what they were attempting to steal at the time.
Three of the seven suspects are soldiers.
Investigators then discovered an unexpected situation: among the seven individuals allegedly involved in these criminal activities, three were actually members of the Canadian military.
Authorities confirmed that the three soldiers are 22-year-old Talarambage Fernando, 29-year-old James Moreau, and 24-year-old Jack Miley.
Fernando and Moreau were arrested on August 11, while Miley was arrested on September 24.
The charges faced by these individuals include armed extortionary kidnapping and forced illegal imprisonment, among others.
According to information from the Canadian Department of National Defence, Fernando joined the reserve forces in January 2020 but was never deployed to carry out any missions.
