U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Gilfoyle announced on Tuesday that she would resign. Not long before that, White House Press Secretary Katie Zakaria stated that Gilfoyle had been asked to leave her position.
In a post on X, Gilfoyle wrote: "Although my tenure as ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the 'America First' movement, and the country I love will never end."
Gilfoyle also generally denied the "recent accusations." This clearly refers to several reports in The Wall Street Journal that criticized his behavior before and after taking on the role of ambassador. These reports had raised doubts about the stability of his position.
In her post, she said, "These accusations are false, and I intend to resolutely defend my reputation, prestige, and integrity." She also stated, "I will not let false accusations define the decades of public service I have devoted to."
When CNBC asked The Wall Street Journal for a comment on Gilfoyle's post, a spokesperson for the newspaper stated: "We stand by our reporting."
Later on Tuesday morning, Trump hinted that reports regarding Gilfoyle's behavior prompted the White House to request her resignation.
Outside the White House, before boarding Marine One, Trump said to reporters, "She does her job well, but we don't like what we read about her."
When a journalist mentioned that Jill Folwell, who was once engaged to Trump's eldest son Donald Trump Jr., could almost be considered a member of the Trump family, the president also refuted this claim.
Trump responded, "No, she is not my family. I think she dated my son many years ago, but she is not part of my family."
Just a few hours ago, Zakaria revealed for the first time during a press briefing in the White House that the White House had urged Gilfoyle to resign.
Zakaria said, "We have asked Ambassador Gilfoyle to resign. She has always been an outstanding member of the team, and we wish her all the best."
Trump hinted on Monday evening that Gilfoyle might face removal from his position.
At that time, a reporter asked the White House if they were considering firing the ambassador, to which Trump replied, "Well, we are considering it."
He also added, "Yes, we are not satisfied."
Gilfoyle's one-year tenure in Athens was impacted last month due to a series of reports first published by The Wall Street Journal. The actions involved in these reports have raised concerns among ethics experts and former government officials.
A report on September 25th alleged that Jill Folwell continuously promoted a Greek company and involved a lobbyist who worked for a Greek construction firm in her meetings with foreign officials.
In response to this report, Jesse Binnall, the lawyer for Gilfoyle, told The Wall Street Journal that Gilfoyle "has worked with companies across the entire energy industry" and has not focused solely on one company.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on October 7, Gilfoyle requested in July 2025 that Trump donor Eric Dietz wire $100,000 so that she could quietly pay off her American Express bill before attending a hearing for her appointment as a congressional ambassador.
Binnar told the newspaper that Gilfoyle had been invited to give speeches at some events before being nominated and received payment for them, and that 'she is entitled to a final payment for attending and supporting these patriotic activities.' According to The Wall Street Journal, Binnar also disputed the authenticity of the information cited in the article, which allegedly came from Gilfoyle, but refused to provide specific details.
The Wall Street Journal also reported on Saturday that in January of this year, when Gilfoyle was seeking an invitation to attend a dinner hosted for another of Trump's sons, Eric Trump, he boasted about his close relationship with a wealthy Greek businessman.
