BNY and Citadel Securities stated on Tuesday that both parties have completed a transaction using tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds, demonstrating how blockchain technology can help Wall Street transfer assets more quickly between trading and financing.

This transfer focuses on collateral, which is a key component of financial markets. Banks and trading companies use U.S. Treasury bonds to provide guarantees for short-term loans and trading activities. Transferring these bonds between accounts and settlement systems takes time, which occupies assets that could otherwise be used for other purposes.

As Wall Street explores bringing traditional assets onto the blockchain, this effort is also advancing. Companies including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan have embraced tokenized funds and securities, betting that this technology can shorten settlement times, automate processes, and make asset transfers easier.

Put tokenized government bonds into use

The goal of the transaction between BNY and Citadel Securities is to demonstrate how tokenized government bonds can transition from the settlement phase to the financing phase, thereby potentially allowing institutions to reuse collateral more quickly and freeing up cash for other transactions. Citadel Securities, the person in charge of digital asset operations, stated in a declaration: "The efficient flow of high-quality collateral is the foundation of a well-functioning market." He added that reducing delays throughout the transaction lifecycle could improve the way the institutional market operates.

BNY indicates that plans are in place to introduce more digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support blockchain-based settlement and financing.

At the same time, it is indicated that there are plans to extend the operating hours of their traditional settlement system for qualified securities with the Federal Reserve and for tripartite repurchase transactions in the United States, with the goal of covering European and Asian trading hours next year. Tripartite repurchase transactions are a form of short-term financing in which banks manage collateral between borrowers and lenders.

BNY Chief Innovation and Market Transformation Officer Carolyn Weinberg stated in the declaration: "By using the tokenization of U.S. Treasury bonds in both settlement and financing processes, we are building a more interconnected, more efficient, and 24/7 operational financial system."

Fortune reported that Applied Materials, the world's largest manufacturer of chip manufacturing equipment, officially launched its new EPIC semiconductor research and development center in Sunnyvale, California, on Monday, with a total investment estimated at $5 billion. The facility will collaborate with companies such as Intel, TSMC, Micron, SK Hyundai Electronics, and Samsung, focusing on the research and development of microprocessors and memory chips, rather than commercial mass production. Applied Materials stated that this collaborative model is expected to reduce the cycle from "concept to commercialization" for new generations of chip architectures from the usual 10 to 12 years to as short as 6 years.

On Tuesday, Jim Cramer of CNBC stated that despite the recent significant pullback in semiconductor stocks, the fundamental demand for chips has not disappeared. Citing his observations at Apple stores, long-term supply agreements with Micron, and the demand from Intel and AMD's CPU, he argued that investors should not focus solely on the semiconductor index but rather pay attention to the actual application scenarios of chips.
