The stock price of Six Flags Entertainment fell by more than 10% in after-hours trading on Monday, following reports of a fatal roller coaster accident at an amusement park in Georgia, which caused a sharp reversal from the previous increase during regular trading hours.
The stock rose by 4.5% at the close of regular trading hours, but then faced selling pressure after the market closed.
It was reported that not long before 4 p.m. on Monday, an accident occurred on the 200-foot-tall Goliath roller coaster within the Six Flags Over Georgia park located at Cobb County, resulting in one death and several injuries. The report cited local police as stating that there were fatalities in the accident.
The police have not provided any more details about the accident, according to reports.
Witnesses told a local news station that they saw a man fall off the roller coaster and collide with the ride several times. The report stated that passengers were later seen being evacuated from the roller coaster, which was at a position near the top at that time.
It is reported that Six Flags stated that the park staff and local authorities immediately responded to the incident. They also added that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation, has temporarily closed similar amusement facilities within its parks, and indicated that out of respect for the privacy of the families of the victims, no further details will be disclosed.
Since the beginning of this year, the company's stock price has fallen by 22%.
