Here are the events that occurred in the crypto industry today.
Want to know what's happening in the crypto market today? Here are the latest daily news and events that affect Bitcoin prices, blockchain, DeFi, Web3, and crypto regulation.
Today in the crypto sector, Ledger investigated suspected losses of crypto assets related to devices sold by a Southeast Asian reseller; the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is seeking industry feedback on tokenized collateral used by clearinghouses; in addition, several crypto projects have applied to join Anthropic's newly launched AI vulnerability scanning program.
Ledger Investigating suspected crypto theft incidents involving resellers in Southeast Asia
Ledger is investigating reports regarding hardware wallets sold by an authorized reseller in Southeast Asia, which are involved in losses of crypto assets; meanwhile, blockchain researchers have reported that the suspected amount stolen exceeds 72 million US dollars.
This hardware wallet manufacturer has requested that authorized distributors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines CryptoBilis suspend sales and deliveries temporarily to allow for an investigation to be conducted.
Customers who purchased devices from CryptoBilis in the past 90 days have been advised not to activate these devices. Users who are already using these devices should consider transferring their assets to a new Ledger wallet with a newly generated mnemonic phrase.
Meanwhile, on-chain investigator tanuki42 identified 8 addresses that are allegedly related to over $72 million in stolen crypto assets. Another researcher, Specter, estimates that the losses involving Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron exceed $86 million.
Security Alliance ( SEAL ) urges potential victims whose funds have flowed to these identified addresses to contact their incident response teams.
Ledger indicates that the losses mentioned in these reports have not yet been verified, nor has it been confirmed whether there is a connection between the suspicious transactions and CryptoBilis.
The company stated that its infrastructure and services were not affected, and it has not received any similar reports regarding devices sold through its own sales channels. The investigation is still ongoing.
ESMA Seeking evidence to prove that tokenized collateral can be liquidated during a crisis
ESMA hopes to see evidence that when the market is under pressure, clearinghouses are able to obtain tokenized collateral and convert it into cash.
ESMA released a consultation document on Friday to collect feedback from the industry on the impact of tokenized collateral.
ESMA Chairman Verena Ross stated: "We must create conditions for the tokenization market to operate safely and on a large scale in a cross-border environment, while also ensuring legal certainty, interoperable infrastructure, and appropriate regulation."
As banks and investors seek faster access to securities to meet margin requirements, tokenized collateral is entering actual settlement operations in Europe. The review of ESMA will help determine whether existing EU rules are sufficient to ensure that such collateral can be obtained and settled in the event of a default by a member where the settlement takes place.
Encrypted project application: Anthropic Newly launched cutting-edge AI Security scanner
Ethereum client developer Nethermind and Bitcoin as well as Lightning wallet ZEUS are among several crypto companies that have applied to join the new project Anthropic. This project enables open-source projects to obtain the strongest security reports generated by their AI models.
These projects submitted their registration applications for OSS Scanner on Friday. Anthropic launched this project on Thursday, with the aim of helping open-source developers to discover and fix vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them.
Anthropic stated in the announcement: 'These reports will be generated by our most powerful models (including Claude Mythos), to provide the greatest defensive advantage for open-source projects.'
As crypto companies seek to use cutting-edge AI models to defend against increasingly powerful attackers, these applications have followed. Cybersecurity experts warn that if defenders cannot access similar tools, they may be at a disadvantage as more powerful alternatives become more widespread.
Anthropic indicates that OSS Scanner is an optional service that continues from its Project Glasswing initiative. The company stated that although they regularly scan for vulnerabilities in open-source software and send reports after manual review, the manual review process is slow, "Therefore, we are not always able to share the vulnerabilities as quickly as we would like."
