Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks will integrate large-scale cell imaging into the closed-loop of the Nebula laboratory
Endeavor ® will introduce the capability to generate high-speed, high-content cell data into the continuous research system of Ginkgo.
Portland, Oregon, and Boston, October 8, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks ( NYSE : DNA ) announced today that they have integrated the Endeavor ® high-content imager from Araceli into Ginkgo's autonomous laboratory located in Boston, Nebula. Both companies stated that Endeavor is the fastest high-content imaging system in the world, and this integration will complement Nebula's existing technical capabilities by adding new cell imaging and real-time analysis functions, providing researchers with a screened and validated large-scale dataset for training and validating AI models.
Nebula is a reconfigurable automated trolley based on Ginkgo ( Reconfigurable Automation Carts, RAC ). Each RAC is a modular unit that combines a robotic arm, an automatic sample transport system, and unified control software, allowing for the addition or reconfiguration of instruments as work processes evolve. The company states that dozens of scientists use their over 100 RAC units every day for real research: after submitting an experimental plan, data can be obtained the next day. Nebula is capable of performing tasks that would normally require many scientists in an autonomous and parallel manner, operating around the clock, and occupies only about one-third of the space required by traditional lab benches to accomplish the same work.
According to the announcement, Endeavor is capable of scanning a 1536-well plate in less than 4 minutes. It has now been integrated into the RAC system of Nebula and is operating continuously in conjunction with its experiments on a regular basis. With the help of the ClaireRT ™ software from Araceli, Endeavor can perform simultaneous analysis of each well during the image collection process. If a well does not meet the preset standards, the system can alert the operator or Nebula, and it is also possible to pause the image collection in order to resolve the issue before continuing with the experiment.
Araceli Biosciences President and CEO, Matt Beaudet, stated: "The next generation of AI in the field of drug discovery requires completely different types of biological data. The laboratories themselves are undergoing changes. They are now capable of generating cell data, interpreting the information they perceive, and responding in real-time. Ginkgo is achieving this through Nebula, while Araceli brings high-resolution imaging and ultra-large-scale real-time analysis into this process."
Ginkgo Bioworks, co-founder and CEO, and Jason Kelly stated: "With each additional advanced instrument added, the value of the autonomous laboratory increases. With your own autonomous laboratory, all researchers can use Endeavor's advanced high-content imaging technology and easily connect it to all other instruments. This is precisely what an autonomous laboratory offers: the ability to integrate the best tools in the field of biology into the same system, the same software, and conduct experiments around the clock."
