Google launched Playground on Wednesday, which is a web platform where users can describe a game in natural language to obtain a playable version without having to write any code. Users can then continue to refine the result through chat, requesting different physical effects, rules, characters, or scenarios, and can share it via links, according to Google.
Playground is currently available to users aged 18 and above in the United States, and access rights will be gradually expanded based on users' Google AI subscription levels. Google's announcement did not provide pricing details, nor did it specify which AI models power this tool.
The game can be run in web browsers on mobile phones and laptops. Creators have the option to keep their works private or post them to a community gallery; in this gallery, each game undergoes security review, and some types also support leaderboards and multiplayer modes.

Google calls Playground "an early experiment aimed at making game creation more accessible to beginners." What it emphasizes is the philosophy of vibe coding: "If you can think of it, you can play it."
However, the capabilities of Playground go beyond what can be achieved with simple vibe and coding during a Google Gemini session. It seems to be able to use the same tools and resources that experienced game developers employ in their daily work.
The upgrade path will be implemented through Unity Spark. Google stated that Playground will soon integrate with Unity Spark to cater to creators who desire professional-level mechanisms and high-fidelity 3D effects. Unity is a game engine company, and it is these types of software tools that game studios use to develop games; the company's then CEO predicted in 2023 that generative AI would reduce the time required to build a game world by five to ten times.
Google's AI research laboratory DeepMind launched Genie in 2024. This model, trained on over 200,000 hours of game video, is capable of converting images or text prompts into a simple 2D platform game. It has 11 billion parameters, which are the adjustable values AI used to store the learned content.

The next day, game-related stocks fell, with Unity closing down by about 24%. Roblox and other companies also experienced declines. Investors are concerned that AI may replace traditional gaming tools. Roblox allows users to create and play games with each other. The company previously told investors in 2023 that it was moving in the direction of enabling anyone to create avatars and clothing solely through text prompts.
For those who have never used a code editor before, Playground has turned a game idea into a conversation, rather than a career transformation; however, currently only adults in the United States can try it. After all, any content generated in this way is more likely to be a prototype rather than a hit product, and Google itself has stated that this is merely an experimental endeavor.
Google and Unity stated in a joint statement that Spark will be launched later this year, while Google also mentioned that closed-door testing is about to begin.
