Salt Lake City, October 6th / PRNewswire / -- ARUP Laboratories has been selected for Utah's second batch of challenge projects, titled “Scaling EventHorizon with Redtail : A Foundation Model for Clinical Flow Cytometry”.

This award will provide researchers at the ARUP Institute for Diagnostic and Precision Medicine Research and Innovation (R&I) with access to Redtail. Redtail is a new state-wide artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputing infrastructure managed by the University of Utah. Utilizing Redtail will enable teams to accelerate the development of a proprietary foundational model aimed at enhancing clinical flow cytometry data analysis capabilities.

“Redtail has provided us with computing power that can significantly accelerate innovation,” said ARUP R & I Institute, Vice Presidents. Robert Ohgami holds a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy, and Master of Business Administration degree. “What used to take months or even longer with traditional resources can now be completed in a very short time, which will help us develop AI tools that support pathologists and improve patient care.”

The project was selected through a competitive evaluation process, with criteria including the level of project preparation, innovation potential, expected impact, and the ability to utilize the advanced computing power of Redtail.

The Chief AI of the University of Utah and Executive Director of the Institute for Scientific Computing and Imaging Manish Parashar congratulates ARUP and other winners of the Redtail challenge, as these teams are advancing important research work.

He said, "These teams will serve as pioneers of the Redtail system, paving the way for other institutions throughout the state and demonstrating how advanced AI empowered by Redtail can amplify Utah's professional strengths, keep us at the forefront of innovation, and bring tangible benefits to all residents of Utah."

The EventHorizon model of ARUP was developed by a team that includes David Ng, a Doctor of Medicine, FCAP who serves as the Director of Hematopathology, Flow Cytometry, and the Application of Artificial Intelligence and Bioinformatics in Medicine, as well as research data scientists Muir Morrison and Mattia Medina Grespan. This tool is designed to assist pathologists in analyzing complex flow cytometry data to aid in the diagnosis of blood cancers and other hematological disorders.

Ohgami indicates that by training on larger datasets and conducting more extensive computational iterations, this model is expected to help identify rare and challenging disease patterns that may otherwise be difficult to detect. It also has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, shorten turnaround times, and help patients receive appropriate treatment more quickly.

According to the University of Utah, Redtail AI Factory recently ranked 159th in the list of the world's fastest supercomputers Top Top 500 and 76th in the Green Top 500 energy-efficient supercomputers list, placing it among the leading academic AI computing resources in the United States. Among public universities in the U.S., Redtail ranks fifth.

Redtail was established with a joint investment of 50 million US dollars from the University of Utah, the state of Utah, Brynn Ballard, Peter Huntsman, and Huntsman Family Foundation. It is equipped with advanced AI infrastructure provided by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NVIDIA. The program aims to expand access to advanced AI infrastructure for researchers, educators, students, and industry partners in Utah. Research claims that between 2020 and 2024, lightning loan attacks stole $1.211 billion from DeFi
A latest study published in the "Journal of Financial Crimes" indicates that from February 2020 to July 2024, lightning loan attacks caused $1.211 billion in losses to decentralized financial platforms across 72 incidents, accounting for 18.44% of the total $6.568 billion in losses from DeFi attacks during the same period. The study also found that over 80% of the losses from lightning loan attacks occurred on Ethereum. Although attacks that exploit protocol logic flaws are less common, they result in higher average losses and are becoming increasingly significant.
