Grindr announced on Wednesday that it will further expand into the healthcare sector by acquiring PurposeMed. PurposeMed is the parent company of HIV, a provider of preventive remote medical services known as Freddie. The transaction is worth $250 million.

According to the terms of the agreement, this dating platform, which targets the LGBTQ community, will pay $190 million in cash and 60 million dollars in Grindr common stock. The agreement also includes an additional cash consideration of up to $70 million, depending on the performance of Freddie in 2027, with that portion to be paid in 2028. Grindr indicates that this acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter.

This is also Grindr's first major acquisition since its establishment in 2009.

"Now we have the next business line, and we believe it will be as profitable as our core business, and it may even be on a larger scale," said George Arison, the CEO of Grindr, in an interview with CNBC.

On the occasion of this acquisition, Grindr is attempting to develop its LGBTQ medical platform, which was launched in 2025, into a larger source of revenue, to run in parallel with its core subscription and advertising businesses.

Arison indicates that the company could have developed this business on its own, but it would have taken two to three years to reach the same scale.

"You need to set up a pharmacy, and you also need clinical doctors to provide the nursing services that you offer to users," said Arison. "As the number of patients increases, the usage rate will rise, and then you'll enter a state with very high profit margins."

Grindr It is estimated that the combined telemedicine and pharmacy services in the United States can generate over $400 in revenue per active patient per month, and if patients receive continuous care throughout the year, the annual income could exceed $4,800.

Arison It is estimated that when the patient base in the United States reaches 50,000 people, this business can generate approximately $240 million in revenue annually.

"What we are doing is exactly what we promised to the market," said Arison. "I hope people will see us as a platform company, not just an online business, but one with multiple business lines that serves a community that truly cares about this product, and we also care about them."

Grindr indicates that although the platform is expected to immediately contribute to the company's EBITDA dollars in increments, in the initial stages of building the business in the United States, such investments will first put pressure on profit margins.

Arison said that the company will disclose more information to shareholders in November regarding how much capital will be invested to drive business growth. However, he expects that as the scale expands, profit margins will improve and will eventually approach the level of over 40% for its core business.

Freddie was established in 2020 with its headquarters in Canada, and it expanded to the United States in 2024. Currently, its services cover all 50 states of the United States as well as Washington D.C. According to data from Grindr, the company has served over 55,000 patients in the United States and Canada, providing remote medical services, testing, prescriptions, and drug delivery.

This acquisition also gives Grindr the opportunity to integrate these services into its applications. Grindr has millions of users worldwide. The company estimates that there are currently about 400,000 American users who indicate in their profiles that they are using PrEP, and another over 2 million American users may benefit from this medication.

PrEP, which refers to prevention before exposure, can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted HIV infections by 99% when used as prescribed.

In the new mode, users can learn about PrEP on the Grindr platform, view insurance coverage, contact clinicians, schedule tests, obtain prescriptions, and manage medication renewals.

“I hope, and I dream that, we can double the current annual growth rate of PrEP which is 10%,” said Arison. “If we achieve this, about 300,000 people will start using PrEP in the next five years, which is equivalent to preventing approximately 5,000 people from being infected with HIV.”

As investors pay attention to how Grindr can diversify its revenue sources beyond its core business, this expansion into the healthcare sector has also attracted attention.

Analyst Nathan Feather stated in a report in July that Grindr is an undervalued company with strong network effects, high engagement, and significant profitability. The firm raised its rating from “neutral” to “overweight” and increased the target price from $16 to $18, citing the company’s potential to achieve stronger monetization capabilities through product-driven strategies.

At the close on Wednesday, the stock price of Grindr was reported at $15.43.
