Cloudflare is setting up a stablecoin “reimbursement account” for AI agents. On Wednesday, this cloud security company announced a tool that has not yet been made available to the general public. This tool allows companies to charge AI agents using the USDC stablecoin, which is pegged to the US dollar.
This message is part of an initiative by Cloudflare to establish a payment system for AI agents. The plan, named Monetization Gateway, allows agents to automatically pay a small fee each time they access online services, without requiring users to register for a monthly subscription or enter their credit card information manually. This tool is currently in a closed testing phase for eligible buyers and sellers in the United States. This move also builds upon cloudflare.pay launched by Cloudflare in August, which allows AI agents to prove that they are acting on behalf of users and to make expenditures from associated wallets.
Cloudflare The product manager Rohin Lohe told Fortune in an email: "We will gradually add more features and users over the remainder of this year, with plans for widespread availability by the beginning of 2027."
Over the past year, as more companies have developed related tools, agentic commerce – that is, using AI to act as an agent to search for products for users, complete purchases, and handle payments – has gradually gained momentum. At the same time, many companies also see stablecoins as a natural choice to facilitate such payments.
Circle The Chief Executive Officer, Jeremy Allaire, has always been one of the most outspoken supporters of this idea. In an article of about 18,000 words published in July titled "The Agentic Economy", he envisioned that in the future, AI agents will increasingly represent individuals and businesses in completing transactions, while stablecoins will play a role as programmable currencies.
The new tool of Cloudflare will act as an intermediary between websites and the AI proxies that access these websites. When the proxy requests information or services, Cloudflare will display the prices and grant access rights after the proxy has completed the payment. The entire process is automated, eliminating the need to manually enter card information or sign up for monthly packages.
In the backend, this tool uses the x402 system of Coinbase – a payment standard that allows websites to charge software access fees – to verify payments. USDC transactions are settled on Base, and Base is the native blockchain network of Coinbase.
Other encryption and payment companies have also launched similar products. Last month, MoonPay integrated its payment and wallet tools that support AI into X’s chatbot Grok. In May, Robinhood announced that customers could use AI agents to make purchases on their behalf using Robinhood Gold credit cards. Circle, Stripe, and Tempo also announced tools designed to allow AI agents to hold funds or make payments.
Credit card networks have also joined in the promotion of AI shopping. In April 2025, Visa released a tool that allows AI agents to shop and make payments for users without providing the merchants with the actual card numbers. In the same month, Mastercard announced a plan that allows verified agents to make purchases within the limits set by the users.
