Currently, many universities in the United States have not yet established a unified approach; teachers often decide for themselves whether to allow the use of AI in class, which forces students to switch back and forth between situations where its use is prohibited and those where they must learn to use it.

Taking North Carolina State University as an example, a freshman who is expected to graduate in 2030 stated that most of her courses require the non-use of AI. Some teachers even explicitly state in the course syllabus that AI is considered a prohibited tool unless citation is indicated. She believes that since AI has become an increasingly common tool in the workplace, schools should also teach students how to use it, rather than completely excluding it.

This kind of disagreement does not only occur in one school. Reports show that many American universities have not yet established a AI usage policy that covers the entire campus, but instead leave the decision-making power to the instructors. A spokesperson for North Carolina State University stated that the university will provide resources to the teachers, who will decide whether to allow, restrict, or prohibit the use of AI based on the needs of their courses, and students are required to comply with these requirements and maintain academic integrity.

Some courses have started to incorporate AI into their teaching.

This arrangement reflects that colleges and universities are still seeking a balance. On one hand, AI is rapidly evolving in a short period of time, with the pace of change even exceeding that of a four-year undergraduate education program; on the other hand, teachers are concerned that students may become overly dependent on these models, which could affect the training of fundamental skills and make cheating on assignments easier.

Despite the lingering concerns, the attitudes of some teachers have begun to change. Sabrina Habib, an associate professor of visual communication at the University of South Carolina, stated that in the early days, many teachers opposed students using AI mainly because they were concerned that it would weaken basic training. However, as AI has become more widely integrated into daily life and work scenarios, an increasing number of teachers are beginning to accept it as a valuable employability skill.

Currently, in some assignments, she allows students to use AI, but she requires them to explain how they are using it and submit evidence of their usage; sometimes she also asks students to write short reflections explaining how they utilized AI to complete the tasks. She believes that this approach enables students to learn to use AI more responsibly, rather than simply avoiding this tool.

Students weigh between use and restraint

A student also mentioned that an introductory course she was taking, which has the code Python, already incorporated AI into its curriculum design. Students can use AI to complete some of the assignments, but they are required to upload prompts and records of model responses for the teachers to review the process.

The current challenge in higher education is how to avoid two extremes: one is complete prohibition, which results in students lacking practical experience after graduation; the other is excessive relaxation, allowing students to rely solely on models for their thinking process. Even though some teachers have not explicitly forbidden it, some students are voluntarily reducing their use of these tools, fearing that long-term dependence on AI will weaken their ability to think independently.
