Two wealthy individuals related to the cryptocurrency industry donated 72 million pounds to the UK Reform UK within two days, an amount that exceeds the total funds raised by all British political parties last year. British media reported that this donation has set a new record for a single contribution to a British political party and has also rapidly enhanced the financial strength of Reform UK.
Two donations set new records
BitMEX, co-founder, donated 36 million pounds first. A day later, Tether, an investor, also donated the same amount. Reform UK said that this money will be used to hire a policy team and 400 campaign managers.
Britain has tightened regulations on political donations
In March of this year, the UK prohibited political donations in cryptocurrency. Current regulations also require that donors who contribute more than £100,000 per year must have been on the voter register for at least 12 months. Reports mention that the UK government is also considering further tightening these regulations.
Donations lead to further scrutiny
Both of these donors have previously attracted attention. Delo was pardoned by Trump in 2025. Harborne has also been at the center of controversy in the past regarding whether a declaration was required for personal donations made to Farage. Meanwhile, British police have launched an investigation into the financial affairs of Reform UK.
