According to the Financial Times, Waymo is seeking to adjust its partnership with Uber. Currently, Waymo's robotaxis are integrated into Uber's ride-hailing network in Austin and Atlanta, but this arrangement could change within the next two years.

The plan is to launch its own application in both cities.

Uber told TechCrunch that Waymo has informed the company of its plans to offer robotaxi services in Austin and Atlanta via its own app starting in January 2028, operating in parallel with its existing services.

Uber also stated that the partnership agreement covering these two cities will expire in May 2028. This means that even if Waymo launches its own entry point first, the existing agreement between the two companies will remain in effect until the contract expires.

The Phoenix partnership has already been split up.

Prior to this, the two companies had already separated their operations in Phoenix earlier this year. TechCrunch had previously reported on this development. Latest news indicates that Austin and Atlanta may also adjust their partnership model in a similar direction.

As of now, Waymo has not immediately responded to requests for comment.

Friction between the two sides has escalated in recent months.

This rumored adjustment to the partnership comes after escalating tensions between the two companies. Previously, Uber's Chief Technology Officer, Praveen Neppalli, released a video criticizing the performance of a Waymo robotaxi as "unsafe" and "concerning."

In May of this year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also mentioned in the earnings call that some robotaxis vehicles had problems performing in school zones and emergency situations, although he did not directly name Waymo at the time.

Meanwhile, Waymo has recently clashed with Uber on several issues concerning the regulation of robotaxis. As their differences widen regarding product access, operational control, and regulatory stances, the partnership faces increasing uncertainty.
