British sprinter and Olympic athlete CJ Ujah denied involvement in a cryptocurrency scam during an appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court in the UK. The case involves 10 people charged with links to an organized crime group and alleges telephone scams targeting cryptocurrency holders.

Victims received calls from imposters

Prosecutors allege that the perpetrators contacted multiple victims by phone, with the callers posing as police officers or cryptocurrency company employees to gain their trust. The victims were then tricked into providing crucial security information, only to discover later that funds stored in their cryptocurrency wallets had been transferred out.

According to reports, one victim lost over £300,000. Case materials show that this type of scam mainly uses identity impersonation and account security rhetoric to target victims' access to their wallets.

Police launched a joint search in April

This case stemmed from an investigation into serious organized crime in eastern England. On April 29, law enforcement officers executed search warrants simultaneously in Kent, Essex, and London, subsequently advancing the prosecution process.

  • The next court hearing is scheduled for September 9.
  • The formal trial is expected to begin on May 24th next year.
  • The trial period is expected to be 12 weeks.

Ujah participated in the Tokyo Olympics.

Ujah, 32, from Enfield, north of London, broke the 10-second barrier in the men's 100 meters in 2014, becoming the fifth British athlete to achieve this feat.

He also participated in the men's 4x100m relay final at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. However, Ujah had previously tested positive for two banned substances during the Tokyo Olympics, resulting in the disqualification of the British team from winning a silver medal. He was later determined not to have intentionally used any banned substances.
