Ford is betting its next-generation electric vehicle on a completely new hardware and software combination, with Apple providing key in-vehicle mapping capabilities. According to information disclosed by both parties, Apple's MapKit for Automotive, designed for the automotive industry, will first be implemented at Ford, initially in a mid-size electric pickup truck planned for release in 2027 and priced at approximately $30,000.
The first model is targeted for 2027.
This collaboration goes beyond simply porting mobile maps to in-car systems. Ford states that the new system will run natively within the vehicle, rather than relying on Apple CarPlay for screen mirroring. Drivers can directly view real-time traffic conditions, accident information, destination search results, and location details on the in-car system.
Ford has recently restructured its electric vehicle development path, abandoning the development approach used in the era of traditional gasoline-powered vehicles and shifting to a universal electric vehicle platform. This platform will initially support mid-size pickup trucks, and will later be expanded to sedans, crossovers, three-row SUVs, and small commercial vans.
Maps will be integrated with BlueCruise
Apple's MapKit for cars will be launched alongside this new product line. Ford hopes to retain a more complete software experience while controlling costs and improving efficiency. The article mentions that Ford is also using large, monolithic die-cast aluminum alloy components on the new platform to reduce the number of parts and speed up assembly.
Both parties stated that road-level information provided by Apple Maps will also be integrated into Ford's next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance system. The upgraded BlueCruise is expected to launch next year, aiming to complete more comprehensive passages in highway scenarios, including entering and exiting ramps.
For electric vehicle users, native map integration has an even more direct use. Both parties stated that the system will support smarter electric vehicle route planning, including battery pre-processing before charging. Before arriving at a charging station, the vehicle's battery can be adjusted to a more suitable temperature, thus shortening charging time.
Commercial vehicle fleets are also a target scenario
Ford also mentioned that this partnership could help its Ford Pro business targeting enterprise customers. If the mapping platform is built directly into the vehicle, businesses can more easily assign drivers to their next work location and view the locations of other vehicles in their fleet on the map.
Apple stated that the technology will be made available to other automakers in the future, but Ford is the first partner. A commercial agreement has been signed, though specific terms have not been disclosed.
