Celestia was founded by researchers with extensive experience in blockchain scaling and distributed systems. Key team members include Mustafa Al-Bassam, who previously worked on blockchain scaling research, and other contributors from the Cosmos and Tendermint ecosystems. The core team combines expertise in consensus mechanisms, cryptography, and distributed computing.

Celestia launched its testnet in 2022 and mainnet in October 2023, with TIA initially trading around $3. The project achieved an all-time high of $20.85 in February 2024. Celestia has established partnerships with multiple ecosystems including Cosmos, Osmosis, and Secret Network, and secured funding from Polychain Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Binance Labs, Galaxy Digital, Blockchain Capital, OKX Ventures, and Delphi Digital.

Celestia employs a modular architecture that separates data availability from execution. It utilizes a 2D Reed-Solomon encoding scheme for data availability sampling (DAS), allowing nodes to verify data availability without downloading the entire block. The blockchain is built using the Cosmos SDK and operates as a sovereign Layer 1 blockchain, with TIA serving as the native token for gas fees, staking, and governance.

TIA has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The token serves multiple functions: validators stake TIA to secure the network and earn block rewards; users pay blob space fees in TIA for data availability; TIA is used for governance voting on protocol upgrades and parameter changes. Token distribution includes allocations for community reserves, team, and investors with vesting schedules.

Celestia operates as a decentralized Proof of Stake (PoS) network where TIA token holders participate in on-chain governance. Token holders can vote on protocol upgrade proposals, parameter adjustments, and ecosystem fund allocations. The decentralized validator set secures the network and achieves consensus through the Tendermint consensus algorithm, ensuring censorship resistance and permissionless participation.

Celestia enables rollups and Layer 2 solutions to outsource data availability while maintaining decentralization. It supports sovereign rollups that can launch their own rollup frameworks using Celestia as the DA layer. Key use cases include modular blockchain infrastructure, Layer 2 scaling solutions, data availability for decentralized applications, and the broader Cosmos and modular blockchain ecosystem.
