US Treasury adjusts its description of auction scale

According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Treasury Department adjusted its statements regarding future auction sizes on Wednesday. Analysts expect this move to pave the way for an increase in the issuance of short- and medium-term Treasury bonds and may lead to a reduction in the auction size of long-term Treasury bonds. The Treasury Department removed the word “at least” from its guidelines, indicating that it expects the auction sizes for floating-rate notes and fixed-coupon bonds to remain unchanged “in the coming quarters.” Many analysts interpret “quarters” as two quarters, which means changes could occur in the first half of 2027. Auctions for 20-year and 30-year Treasury bonds have sometimes struggled to attract demand and are considered the most likely to see reductions. An increase in coupon rates is likely to focus mainly on 2- to 7-year bonds, with 10-year Treasury bonds also possibly seeing rate hikes. The Treasury Department also stated that it will assess potential adjustments to future auction sizes based on trends in structural demand, as well as the potential costs and risks of various issuance structures. The Treasury Department announced that it will issue $125 billion in Treasury bonds next week, including $58 billion in 3-year bonds, $42 billion in 10-year bonds, and $25 billion in 30-year bonds.
