According to CoinMeta, OpenAI announced the appointment of former U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as a "Senior Advisor on National Security Modernization," responsible for promoting the application of AI in the fields of defense and cybersecurity, as well as assisting the company in collaborating with the U.S. government and allies. Driscoll participated in the Iraq War and resigned due to disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The Operation Jailbreak initiative he promoted aimed to integrate incompatible radar and command systems of the U.S. military. OpenAI abolished the policy prohibiting military use in early 2024 and secured a contract worth up to $200 million from the U.S. Department of Defense in 2025. In February of this year, OpenAI integrated ChatGPT into the genai.mil platform and signed an agreement with the Pentagon that allowed its models to be deployed in confidential environments. The military cooperation sparked controversy, and OpenAI, the head of robotics and hardware, resigned due to concerns about the rapid advancement of the agreement. OpenAI stated that the agreement prohibits the use of the technology for large-scale domestic surveillance or allowing AI to independently control autonomous weapons.
