A court in Illinois, USA, issues a ban prohibiting taxation on prediction markets

According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Bloomberg, on October 30th, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting the state from imposing new taxes and related licensing requirements on prediction market operators regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Judge Martha Pacold pointed out that since these taxes are only applicable to operators holding state government licenses, and the court had previously preliminarily determined that the state's licensing requirements might be exempted under federal law, such taxes could not be enforced either. At the beginning of October, the court had already issued preliminary prohibitions on Illinois from enforcing the relevant licensing regulations at the request of Kalshi, Coinbase, and CFTC, but the tax issue had not yet been ruled upon at that time. Illinois has filed an appeal against the latest injunction. This injunction is a temporary judicial remedy and does not constitute a final ruling on the state government's taxing authority.
